Error Messages

During single- or multi-player gameplay, it is possible that an error message will be generated and Firestorm will stop running.  The two most common errors encountered are an "Internal Error" message (either during single or multiplayer), and a "Reconnection Error" during multiplayer games. In these cases, Firestorm will generate an error log that should be sent to Westwood for examination. If you send these files to us, we can more easily and quickly determine the cause of the error.

If you receive an Internal Error during play, a file named "except.txt" will be created in the Tiberian Sun directory.  Please be sure to attach this file to any e-mail you send to Westwood requesting technical support.

If a Reconnection Error occurs, files named syncx.txt will be created in the Tiberian Sun directory, where x is the number of the player with which a problem occurred.  In this case, when sending e-mail to Westwood, please include all syncx.txt files from all machines involved in the game.

If your game is crashing on startup, in addition to upgrading to the latest drivers for your video and sound cards, ensure that there is no reference to EMM386.EXE in your config.sys file. EMM386 is the original DOS extended/expanded memory manager and is not necessary for Windows 9x operation. It is installed by default, however, on many computers, and it is also added to the config.sys file by the installation software for some sound cards.  EMM386 has been known to cause conflicts and other problems with Windows games.  Note, however, that if the reference to EMM386 is removed, you will no longer have audio support in DOS games.

To remove EMM386 from your config.sys file, open the file with any text editor (such as Notepad).  Find the line that looks similar to this:
device=emm386.exe
and change it to this:
rem device=emm386.exe
(Simply add "rem" in front of the line)
This will disable emm386 without actually deleting the file.  If in the future you need to re-enable the reference, simply remove rem from the line.
